How to Measure Your Head and Find Your Perfect Wig Size
Finding a wig that fits your head perfectly is key to rocking it with style and confidence. If you are afraid to purchase a wig because of how you think it may look, you’ve bought one and found it too big, or it didn’t fit quite right, then this information is for you.
This size guide will teach you how to measure your head with a measuring tape to find the perfect wig size for your head. It is essential to take this extra step once you decide to invest in a high-quality wig.
Most high-quality wigs are made with adjustable straps, and as such, the sizes vary based on the manufacturer. However, this guide provides an excellent baseline for choosing the correct size wig to fit your head perfectly for that seamless look.
Measuring Your Head for the Perfect Wig Size
Finding the right size wig for your head begins with understanding the measurements you’ll need. For that perfect fit, you need six (6) measurements of various parts of your head per the list below.
- Head circumference
- Front hairline to the nape of your neck
- Ear-to-ear over the top of your forehead
- Ear-to-ear over the top of your head
- Temple-to-temple behind the back of your head
- Nape of the neck at the back of the hairline
Each measurement represents a different part of the wig and comes in handy when looking for the correct size wig. It is crucial to get the measurements right, as the more accurate they are, the better the wig will fit.
Do not measure your head if you are wearing a ponytail or any other style other than the style you will be wearing under the wig. Measuring your head in any different style will cause the wig to be ill-fitted.
Measure the Head Circumference
Do the following to get the correct measurement for your head circumference:
- Please start at the center of your forehead, and pull the tape measure back behind your ear, until it reaches the nape of your neck.
- Pull the tape around the nape of your neck and take it behind your other ear.
- Bring the ends of the tape measure to meet in the center of your hairline at the forehead.
- Note measurement.
Measure Front to Nape
Follow the steps below to measure from the front of your head to the nape of your neck:
- Place the measuring tape at your hairline in the middle of your forehead.
- Pull it directly over the crown of your head, down to the nape of your neck, making sure the tape is in the middle of your head.
- Note measurement.
Ear-to-Ear Over the Top of Your Forehead (across your forehead)
This step is essential when getting a frontal wig to ensure that you get the right size that fits your head. To take this measurement, do the following:
-
Place the measuring tape at the top of your ear.
-
Take the tape across the hairline (forehead) until it reaches the top of the next ear.
-
Note measurement.
Ear-to-Ear (over the top of your head)
This measurement helps you understand how much you will need to cut off from your ear tabs. To measure over the top of your head, follow these steps:
- Place the measuring tape just above one ear.
- Pull the tape up and over the top of your head until it reaches above the next ear.
- Note measurement.
Measure Temple to Temple
To measure temple to temple, do the following:
- Place the beginning of the measuring tape at one temple, next to your eyebrow.
- Pull the tape around the back of your head, around the most curved part of your head, and take it right around until you get to the next temple.
- Note measurement.
Measure the Nape of Your Neck
Lastly, you will need the nape of the neck measurement for a closure wig. The nape is where the base of the wig will sit. To measure the nape of the neck, do the following:
- Place measuring tape behind one ear, level with the bottom of your ear lobe.
- Pull the tape around the base of your hairline (back of your head), or the nape, until it reaches below the next ear.
- Note measurement.
